Grand Station Project

Design Project Five was a brief set by The RSA. The brief allowed us to think freely and experiment with interior and exterior schemes for neglect and derelict commuter stations across the UK. For this project, I took a personal approach and produced a design concept for my local commuting and rail service in the town of Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

As plans have increased to rejuvenate the marketplace and town, in partnership with the Auckland Project. This design was to align the repurposing of the station with future plans and prospects of the town. The station can become a point of meeting place/space for future tours for tourists and also provide space for local businesses or community groups to hold meetings, interviews etc. With recessed and level windows and doors this allows the base plane to freely flow from the platform to footpath.

The train station will become a new hub for Bishop Auckland’s plan for regeneration and will install civic pride back into the community by transforming the station from a single use development, into an inspiring redeveloped station that is focused on providing benefit to the local and surrounding communities of Bishop Auckland.

The roof is vital and influential element of the design. With sustainability in mind and reducing carbon footprint, the station will have an instillation of a green roof. It is also designed to be garden that produces flower displays that could regenerate the station into a new visiting point for the town. This would increase attraction and footfall back into the town of Bishop Auckland and reconnect the marketplace with the rest of the town.
